You can destroy the rock by bashing it with any melee weapon. This is the slow way of breaking it, however. The rock can hide a chest underneath or just blocks the path to one. If you want to break it faster you need to use bombs.
There are many types of bombs. For example, you need 2 cherry bombs to blow up the whole rock, or a single red devil. Red devil is the best for blowing up rocks and you can buy it at the Royal Emporium or craft it yourself at the engineering bench.
